Adult & Teen Challenge New Mexico – An Affordable Christian Recovery Solution for Alcoholism
Understanding Alcohol:
Alcohol is one of the easiest drugs to find. It’s cheap everywhere, and many people think it’s okay to drink. But it’s also very harmful and dangerous. When someone becomes addicted to alcohol, it doesn’t just affect them – it hurts their family, friends, and the community around them.
History and How Common Alcoholism Is:
Alcoholism, which means being addicted to alcohol, is one of the oldest addictions. People have been drinking alcohol for a long time, and where there’s drinking, there can be alcoholism. Today, lots of people in the U.S. have tried alcohol at least once – about 86.4% of adults. Some people drink too much in a short time, which is called binge drinking. Around 26.9% of adults binge drink.
More men than women tend to become alcoholics. In the past, it was more okay for men to drink a lot. But things are changing, and now both men and women are drinking more. Binge drinking has gone up by 17.5% for women in the last 10 years. Alcoholism doesn’t care who you are – it can affect anyone. Poor or rich, any race, any job. It can even be in families, meaning children of alcoholics might become alcoholics too.
Alcoholism isn’t good for anyone. More than 7% of adults in the U.S. have a problem with drinking – that’s about 13.8 million people. Out of those, about 8.1 million are alcoholics.
How to Tell if Someone’s an Alcoholic:
It’s not too hard to figure out if someone’s an alcoholic. But sometimes, they try to hide it. They might lie about how much they drink. Alcoholics can be good at hiding their addiction.
Some signs are drinking a lot and then not remembering things (blackouts). If someone drinks a lot every time they drink, that’s binge drinking. Alcoholics might get shaky if they can’t drink when they want to. They might start drinking early in the day, which isn’t normal. Alcohol can also make people look different – their eyes might be red, their face puffy, and their belly bigger. Sometimes, alcoholics shake a little, especially their hands.
Alcohol can make people act weird. Even though alcohol is supposed to slow you down, alcoholics might act really excited or sad. They might even feel like hurting themselves or someone else.
How Alcoholism Affects Money:
Alcoholism doesn’t cost as much as some other addictions, but it still costs a lot. Alcoholics might spend about $20 a day on alcohol. Even though they might do illegal things because of alcohol, that’s not usually the main reason they do it. Alcohol can make people do things they wouldn’t do if they were sober.
Alcohol also hurts relationships and life. Alcoholics might get in trouble with the law, like getting a DUI, which is driving drunk. They might also get into fights or do things they wouldn’t normally do. Alcohol can damage the body, too. After a while, alcoholics can’t stop drinking suddenly without getting sick. Alcohol can damage their organs, and it can even cause death.
How Alcohol Harms the Body and Mind:
The liver, which processes alcohol, is usually the first part of the body to get hurt. Alcoholics might have liver problems. Alcohol also affects the brain, making it hard to think and make good choices. As people keep drinking, they need more alcohol to feel good. This can make them depressed and messed up in the head. Alcohol can even damage the brain so much that it doesn’t get better.
Alcoholism Doesn’t Go Away:
Alcoholism is a problem that doesn’t go away. Once someone is an alcoholic, they can’t drink safely again. Many alcoholics end up drinking again after a while. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says about 90% of alcoholics start drinking again within 4 years. Some think they’re okay and can control their drinking, but they usually end up addicted again.
Detoxing from Alcohol:
When someone wants to stop drinking, they can have a hard time. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous. People might get sick if they stop too quickly. They might shake, feel depressed, and even have seizures. It’s better to get help from doctors when trying to stop drinking. They can give medicine to make it easier and safer.
